Mindset is a frame through which we view our successes, mistakes, fears, and triumphs, and a powerful driver of perceptions about self, one’s capabilities and place in the world. New research about the power of mindset to empower or inhibit learning and change shows that therapists can galvanize clients' capacity to embrace new ideas, practice new behaviors and connect with new social networks through our understanding and application of it. Applied Improvisation is a creative, highly collaborative process that demonstrates the concept of shifting mindsets through direct experience, which is shown to produce curable, long-range change in behavior. Improv experiences cultivate mental acuity and flexibility, social-emotional connections to others, the psychological “muscle” of exploring uncertainty with courage, heightened awareness of the possibilities of the moment, receptivity to the unpredictable and listening skills, all of which are linked to the "growth" mindset.

This workshop is for therapists, educators or others who work with people in the process of learning and change. We will discuss the research into the "growth" mindset and how it can impact work with individuals and groups. We will discuss how to apply the games and exercises to different client or student groups.
