Positive Psychology is a strengths-based approach to mental health and well-being, grounded in the scientific study of resilience and optimal functioning. This practical science can be applied to empower people to generate and sustain a positive approach to life, take responsibility for their own choices, actions and attitudes, increase resiliency to difficult circumstances, through focusing on ways to identify and make the most of one's strengths, talents and gifts. The "happiness skills" associated with positive psychology are the same skills developed through the games and exercises used in improvisation. Creative, improvisation-based experiences are designed to generate a positive emotional state among participants and use that energy to work through challenges, shift gears, think creatively under pressure and solve problems in creative ways. This workshop will explore the use of applied improvisation to develop the mindset and "happiness skills" that research into positive psychology show can empower clients to make lasting change in their lives. The games and exercises used in this workshop can be adapted for work with any age group and a variety of applications will be discussed.

In this workshop we will:

Learn games designed to generate a creative mindset;

Learn and play games that cultivate positive thinking skills;

Experience and learn games that cultivate social-emotional support in groups;

Explore and experiment with the skills that develop strengths associated with resiliency;

Examine a mind and skill set for thinking positively and creatively when under stress;

Discuss the research that supports the effectiveness of the positive psychology approach in clinical and education settings;
