Transformative Storytelling: Developing Stories That Educate, Motivate and Inspire-( NYC location)

This workshop is approved by NYS as Continuing Education for Social Workers, provider #0270

Friday April 7, 2017  1-5 pm at Simple Studios, 134 W. 29th St. 2nd Floor, New York, NY   $75

This workshop will explore the art of developing a true experience into a compelling story that maximizes its potential to "land" on the listener, and examine the ways storytelling is being used in health care and health education. Studies show that stories told artfully, that take listeners on an emotional journey have the potential to shape behavior. Specific techniques for shaping a story, choosing details, using imagery, metaphor and humor will be examined. We will also explore how the tools of storytelling strengthen our influence on the public, our clients and the communities we serve, as they seek to reshape the stories they tell in their own lives. We will look at stories that:

1) Maximize the impact of our message when we speak to the communities we serve, communicate important information about our work to peers in presentations, make pitches for projects or perform in public settings;

2) Focus the attention of a community, organization or client group on important issues, information or projects of which we are a part;

3) Can be used as a frame for sharing important facts, data or information;

4) Are inspirational and cultivate hope;

We will explore:

·         Interpersonal skills that are cultivated through telling and listening to personal stories;

·         How to embed facts and information into a story to use in education or training situations;

·         What research tells us about storytelling and empathy and social connection;

·         What research tells us about storytelling for consciousness-raising and behavior change;
